The Rivals stands out as the absolute highlight
Scenario
Next up are Rupert Campbell-Black and Tony Baddingham. The same filming location was used to depict Trenwith House in the 2015 BBC TV adaptation of Poldark. As far as TV series go, this year has been pretty average.
The Rivals is entertaining, smart, irreverent, and witty
It’s a multi-layered masterpiece that certainly deserves a sequel. Conceptually it’s a soap opera, narratively a satire, and stylistically a period piece. The attentive viewer will find in it a message that, for once, doesn’t push superficial or overbearing political idealism, but seeks the truth.
The soundtrack appeals to any 80s child
Not a single episode feels sloppy, unnecessary, or forced; the story and characters build beautifully to an extraordinary climax. The writing, scenes, lines, and direction serve the whole. The performance is a joy to watch.
Highly recommended, the best show of the fall
The always great David Tennant shines as the humane villain, and Alex Hassell shines as his opposing force. Victoria Smurfette and Aidan Turner make a convincing, well-matched broken couple. The audience sees the rise of several new stars, especially Belle Maclean who will be a name to remember for years to come.
