After the pope dies, his ring (called the Fisherman’s Ring) is taken away and destroyed
Scenario
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secret and long-running events: the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the foundations of the Catholic Church. Much of what Cardinal Lawrence and the other priests do during the conclave in the film is consistent with the Catholic faith and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant.

The papal apartments are cordoned off with a red ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals is sequestered in rooms (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. The windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where elections and voting take place, are darkened, closed and locked to maintain the secrecy of the conclave.
